For decades, the space race was all about building bigger rockets with increasing launch capacity. The record launch of 104 satellites by ISRO, the highest number of satellites ever launched in a single mission. India has stormed into the elite space club and besting the previous record of 37 satellites launch by Russian rocket in 2014. The deployment was a "remarkable feat" and proud moment for the space community and the entire nation, said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet. "India salutes our scientists." The large number of satellites was possible because except one all the satellites were nano satellite weighing less than 10 kg (about 20 pounds). The majority were from the United States, two nano satellite were from India, and there was one each from Kazakhstan, Israel, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates. The only non-nano satellite was Cartosat from India, designed for imagining and mapping applications. It was the heavyweight at more than 750 kg around 1,500 pounds. Let's take a look at the reasons which makes ISRO stand out in the space mission and gives a tough challenge to Elon Musk's Space X as well as other space agencies of world. India's space launches beat those by advanced countries due to the low cost launch of satellites. American company Space X Rocket Falcon 9 launch costs $57 million (about Rs 381 crore). A Russian Proton launch costs $68 million (roughly Rs 455 crore). Launches of the Japanese Rocket H-IIA, the Chinese rocket Long March, European rocket Ariane-5 and another American Rocket Atlas V each cost around $100 million (about Rs 669 crore). An Isro PSLV rocket launch by comparison, costs just $15 million (roughly Rs 100 crore). The price offer by ISRO is around 4 to 7 time less than the price offer by foreign space companies. The low cost launch of satellite is a major advantage for ISRO. In fact, Antrix the commercial arm of ISRO, provides launch services much cheaper than competition. The US based Space X and the French Arianespace simply cannot compete with the prices that are offered by ISRO. In fact, ISRO provides satellite launch services at such a low cost, that the American private launch industry is threatened by ISRO, and has lobbied for a policy change in America that prevents American companies from using Indian launch vehicles such as the PSLV. ISRO might not have the highest launch capacity as compared to other nation’s launch vehicles. But the combination of the lowest prices and a track record with few failures, makes ISRO one of the best options currently available for launching small satellites in low earth orbit. However, in the last few years there has been a proliferation of nanosatellites, microsatellites and picosatellites. These small satellites are cheap to make and easily configurable. Private companies, educational institutions and space agencies around the world are finding newer and more innovative uses for nanosatellites, As the nanosatellites keep getting made, and are more useful in space than on the ground, there are waivers given to companies on an individual basis, to allow them to use ISRO launch vehicles. ISRO chief AS Kiran Kumar has said, Increasing the number of satellites in a single launch is a way for ISRO to stay competitive. The PSLV-C37 mission of launching 104 satellites is more about using the available technology to its full extent, as against setting a world record.

this video give information about India vs Pakistan space race from beginning. In the year of 1961, the globally renowned Pakistani physicist and Nobel Prize winner in Physics Dr. Abdus Salam is convincing president Ayub Khan to set up a national space agency, the first in the subcontinent. In September that year, Dr. Salam sets up the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) headquartered in Karachi. a full eight years before neighbor India formalizes its own space agency. the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was established in 1969, the same year when humans set foot on the moon. The initial years of the agency are buoyed by hope. Four top scientists are sent to the NASA to study space technology. In 1960, when President John F Kennedy had announced that the United States of America planned to land an American on the moon, and bring him safely back to earth before the decade was over. NASA needed to map the wind conditions at the upper atmospheric region above the Indian Ocean. At that time NASA asked Pakistan to help in this project because at that time Pakistan space agency Suparco was reputed space agency in Asia. In 1961, Dr. Abdus Salam and Dr. Tariq Mustafa held a meeting with NASA officials in Washington. On the occasion, NASA offered help to Pakistan in the development and launching of rockets to map the atmosphere above Indian Ocean, on the condition that any data acquired from the research on upper atmosphere will be shared with NASA. But Suparco is already falling behind as the government shifts attention from space project to the atomic bomb project, shifting key resources and scientists out of the space agency Suparco. The only high point of the decade is a visit by Apollo 17 astronauts to Pakistan. Pakistan would launch its first satellite, Badr I, only in 1990 with Chinese assistance. Putting aside NASA and the European Space Agency, ISRO too started off with resources similar to SUPARCO, and ISRO with even lesser expertise than Pakistan. SUPARCO was ahead of all other Asian nations in the space race, but what happened to Pakistan space agency. the real fall comes in the 1980s and 1990s. First, President Zia-ul-Haq cuts off funding to major projects, including the flagship satellite communication launch. Then, military generals are placed atop the organisation, replacing scientists and the focus of the agency becomes countering India, rather than independent research. At the same time, the government of Pakistan disowns Dr. Abdus Salam for being Ahmadiyya, because Ahmadiyya muslim doesn’t believe that Mohammed was the final prophet. Dr. Abdus Salam’s, all the government assistance was stop and expel from the community. Abdus Salam was the one of 20th century’s most important theoretical physicists could have offered more. This affects the production of indigenous technology that is the backbone of any modern agency, and makes Suparco dependent on foreign technology. In contrast, ISRO launches its first communications satellite, starts technology sharing programmes with several countries and unveils a remote sensing satellite system that is now the largest in the world. The agency is also successful in attracting talent, helped by its autonomy and scientists at the helm. But today, Suparco continues to hurt, mainly from crunched education funding that is the lowest in south Asia and continued military supervision. Its current chairman Qaiser Anees Khurrum is a former top general. The agency has suffered a series of embarrassing failures in recent decades. It has had to give up orbital slots because it couldn’t launch in time, Pakistan first satellite was leased from the US and its latest satellite, the Paksat-1R, launched in 2011, is Pakistan’s latest satellite, that was funded, designed, built, and launched by China, only a few components of satellite were built in Pakistan. It is Pakistan’s only fully functional satellite and it’s a communication satellite. So much for a national space agency of Pakistan in the 21st century. But despite its super head start, the Suparco today is decades behind the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in both mission success and technological prowess. ISRO broke a world record by sending 104 satellites to space, in contrast, Suparco is not expected to have indigenous satellite launching and producing technology for at least two decades and the target it has set itself is 2040, but whether it will meet its target is anyone’s guess. India plans to reach Venus and revisit Mars by then, if not more. India, on the other hand, has been able to launch national as well as international satellites. It has even managed to launch its own unmanned lunar probe, the Chandrayaan-1, Mars mission, Mangalyaan. Now ISRO is planning to launch its solar mission (Aditya L1 mission).
